For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made . . . Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.  Romans 1

In ancient times, people exchanged the glory of God for that of creeping things as they fashioned graven images of birds and beasts and bowed to them in worship, giving them credit for things like rain, crops, health, and general success in life. Today people are no less drawn away from their Creator. Though we have largely moved away from physical idols, our darkened hearts still worship birds and beasts as we celebrate the glory of creeping things along the evolutionary timeline rather the God who made us. There are different aspects to glory, but one is to give credit, and when the credit for the diversity and beauty of life is given to natural creatures over the supernatural Creator it has been severely misplaced.

Many Christians today seek a compromise known as “evolutionary creation”. This is the idea that God used and directed evolutionary biological processes to bring about the diversity of life we see in the world. But in an even greater assault to the glory of God, this view must suppose that God wielded death as His means of creation as evolution only progresses when unfit creatures die. To say that long before Adam existed or sinned, death not only reigned on earth, but was actually God’s plan for creating, is a bold claim that not only contradicts the revealed Word of God, but elevates and glorifies physical death, that most horrible enemy of human beings, as a prerequisite for life.

The glory of God in creation is found in the Word that describes His unrivaled supernatural power to speak fully formed light, space, planets, suns, plants, animals, and yes, human beings into existence out of shear nothingness. He need not ask nature’s permission, nor follow any natural law for He is nature’s law-giver. There was no death in God’s original creation and it only came on the scene as the consequence for Adam’s sin. That which God created He described as “good”, and far be it from me or any other created thing to qualify what God meant when he used that word. In order to explain the ravages of death prior to sin, some argue that God only said His creation was good, but not perfect. But when Jesus was addressed as “good teacher” and went on to say that “only God is good” should we question the character of the Almighty because Jesus did not say “perfect”?

The theory of evolution was not born out of a Christian worldview. It is not meant to be a supplement to our faith but a substitute for it. It is the answer to life that assumes the absence of a Creator. In accepting it, we rob God of His radiant glory as displayed in Creation and bestow it upon creeping things, or worse yet, bestow it upon death as the means God used to form life. I admit it is difficult in these days to accept God at His Word, but if we stray from Him to where will we go? And at what cost? But if we trust Him and give Him all the glory, and if He is on our side, then who can be against us?

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
